Let Go & Carry On

There is so much satisfaction in completing a task — finishing a painting, or any project, for that matter.

How many times do we start things in life and leave them open-ended? Things we circle back to over and over again. Of course, some tasks in life truly are never “done” — laundry, dishes, house cleaning, and the like. As long as we’re living, some tasks simply continue for a lifetime. But that’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about the things we choose to do — or not do.

The book we didn’t finish reading. The home reno project that’s still half done. In my case, the paintings that are just about there but need one last once-over to complete them.

This Week’s Challenge

My challenge for this week is to look around me and see how many unfinished tasks — how many open pages — I still have lying around, so I can close them, or at least turn the page and move on.

Sometimes we don’t even need to finish them. We just need to convince ourselves we’ve lost interest, or that we’ve outgrown them, shelve them, and mark them “done” in our minds. That’s often enough to find a little peace amid all our unfinished business.

A Season for Reevaluating

Spring and fall are always big transition times for me — a chance to reevaluate what’s right in my life and what needs changing. What’s working, what isn’t, what needs finishing, and what new adventures I can get into.

You can’t turn back the pages you’ve already written, so the real question is: how does your story continue from here?

Write It Well

You only get to write your story once, so do your best to write it well. Learn all you can as you go. Finish the things you start — and if you can’t, that’s okay too. Sometimes finishing simply means letting go, and carrying on.

Your load will feel lighter once you set down some of what you’ve been carrying. Think of your brain like a computer — every so often, you need to clear out the cookies that are slowing it down. Take some time to reboot. Hit “end task,” and/or delete.

Sometimes all it takes is to actually make a choice.  Do you need to finish it, or let it go, either way it will let you carry on.
