The Importance of Play

Life is full of everyday tasks, and it feels overwhelming sometimes. That is exactly why it is essential that we set aside time to play. I held an exceptionally enjoyable class tonight that took me right back to grade school — getting dirty, finger painting. There is just something about getting right in there with your hands that connects your soul to what you create. Not only does it allow you to escape the daily rat race, but it lets you touch and feel and connect to something totally different and unique.

Painting Is a Powerful Outlet

I find that painting is such a valuable outlet for mental health, stress release, and just plain enjoyable entertainment. Watching my students light up and become engrossed in the process is incredibly fulfilling to me. There is a physical and mental shift that takes place — one that only happens when you allow yourself to truly play. It is a special kind of innocent release that lets us escape, if only for a few hours, to a happy place.

In the words of Bob Marley — “Don’t worry, Be Happy” — and remember, my friends, you are never too old to play. It is not only allowed, it is necessary to maintain balance in your life.

The bright colors and high contrast give this acrylic painting an almost impressionist feel.
Here’s My Advice

Next time you’re feeling a little overwhelmed at work, or the kids are driving you mad at home, or you’re waiting for an appointment — instead of scrolling through your phone, pick up a piece of paper and a pen. Doodle a little. Grab your kids’ crayons or markers and color something. Create something — anything. Draw a picture in the sand or the dirt, chalk marks on the sidewalk. I promise you, you will not regret it. Connect with your creativity and rediscover how to play. Your mental health and your happiness depend on it!

Each version has similar components, yet each painting captures a slightly different atmosphere. Presumably as different as the personality of the artists.
